In particular, the downtown areas of Sokcho and Gangneung experienced traffic paralysis due to the influx of cars for Christmas.
On the 25th, cities and counties in Gangwon Province conducted overnight snow removal on major roads starting from the previous day (24th) while making every effort to minimize damage to facilities and other infrastructure.
Sokcho City deployed about 500 public officials and over 30 snow removal vehicles to major roads from 7 a.m. that day, carrying out snow removal work such as spreading de-icing agents on main roads in the city, city bus routes, and drainage systems where snow had accumulated.
Prior to the heavy snow warning, the city issued Disaster Countermeasures Headquarters Level 1 from 11 a.m. on the 24th and entered an emergency duty system centered on the disaster department.
Gangneung City deployed city hall officials and self-governing organizations to snow removal vulnerable areas such as commercial districts and village alleys to carry out snow removal work.
The health center’s screening clinic and the temporary screening site in Yucheon district completed snow removal work that started early that morning and are operating normally.
Gangwon Province deployed snow removal equipment and personnel and launched an emergency support team for daily life complaints to prevent pipe freezing in 15 cities and counties in the Gangwon region.
Snow removal operations were carried out by mobilizing 376 pieces of equipment and over 3,200 personnel in six cities and counties along the East Coast, while assessing damage to agricultural facilities and other areas.
Meanwhile, according to the Gangwon Regional Meteorological Office, as of 9:20 a.m. that day, snowfall amounts were 55.9 cm in Sokcho, 54.4 cm in Cheongho (Sokcho), 42.7 cm in Jumunjin, Gangneung, 35.3 cm in Bukgangneung, 25.5 cm in Gangneung, and 21.1 cm in Donghae.
Mountainous areas recorded snowfall amounts such as 23.2 cm in Seorak-dong, Sokcho, 19.4 cm in Misiryeong, 19.1 cm in Jinburyeong, 6.2 cm in Guryongryeong, and 4.9 cm at Dalbang Dam, Donghae.
In the Gangwon region, damages from the heavy snowfall included 10 cases of vehicle entrapment, 2 cases of vehicle congestion, 2 traffic accidents, 2 power outages, and 2 roof collapses.
The old Misiryeong road has been closed since the previous day, and a 2.3 km section of rural road No. 202 in Goseong County is also closed. Access to Seoraksan National Park and Odaesan National Park trails is also restricted due to safety concerns.
