Turning Crisis into Opportunity... Chung Mong-gyu Strengthens 'Agile Management'
HDC Group Executive Personnel Changes
Jung Mong-kyu, Chairman of HDC Group, has laid the groundwork for a new leap forward through innovative personnel appointments aimed at strengthening 'Agile management.'
According to HDC Group on the 23rd, the group conducted a regular executive personnel reshuffle involving a total of 30 people, including appointing President Yoo Byung-kyu and Executive Director Ha Won-gi as co-CEOs of HDC Hyundai Development Company the day before. This move is seen as reflecting Chairman Jung's plan to evolve beyond a simple construction company into a comprehensive financial real estate company and the nation's leading unique developer.
This year, HDC Group experienced its worst year due to the collapse disaster of a demolition building in Gwangju. On June 9, a five-story building under demolition in the redevelopment area of Hakdong 4 District, Gwangju Metropolitan City, collapsed toward the road, crushing a city bus and resulting in 17 casualties (9 deaths and 8 injuries).
The Gwangju disaster put Chairman Jung's 'Agile management' under scrutiny. Agile management is an organizational operation method inspired by the English word 'agile,' meaning 'nimble' or 'quick,' which breaks down departmental boundaries and grants decision-making authority on a project basis to handle tasks swiftly and flexibly. Chairman Jung introduced the agile system to the construction industry for the first time in 2018. However, during this process, there was criticism that safety was neglected in favor of efficiency and speed, which led to the Gwangju disaster.
The recent personnel reshuffle is viewed by the industry as Chairman Jung's determination to turn the crisis of agile management into an opportunity. In this reshuffle, Chairman Jung transitioned HDC Hyundai Development Company to a co-CEO system with Yoo Byung-kyu and Ha Won-gi. The co-CEO system is a management method where each CEO exercises the authority of the CEO independently, allowing for swift and autonomous decision-making based on expertise in their respective fields. HDC explained the background of this reshuffle as "reflecting Chairman Jung's will to develop an agile and horizontal organizational culture."
New CEO Ha previously served as the site manager for large projects such as Cheongju Gagyeong I-Park Complexes 2, 3, and 4. Since 2020, he has overseen housing, architecture, and civil engineering sites as the head of the Construction Management Headquarters. CEO Ha will concurrently serve as the head of the Construction Headquarters, tasked with strengthening the fundamental competitiveness of HDC Hyundai Development Company.
New CEO Yoo is expected to lead a more agile and flexible organization, focusing capabilities on discovering future growth engines. Notably, HDC Hyundai Development Company recently won a private investment project this month to create a sports and MICE complex space in Jamsil in a consortium with Hanwha Construction. They plan to maximize business competitiveness and synergy by introducing know-how from complex development projects such as Gwangwoon University Station area, Yongsan Railroad Hospital site, and Gongneung Station area development projects, as well as content linked with HDC Group affiliates.
