It diagnosed that over the next 10 years, there will be an annual average shortage of about 750 master's and doctoral-level talents in the energy industry compared to demand.
The Presidential Committee on Jobs held its 22nd meeting on the 22nd at the Press Center in Jung-gu, Seoul, and announced that it had approved four agenda items, including the 'Plan to Nurture Energy Technology Personnel for Carbon Neutrality.'
According to the Jobs Committee, as of last year, 291,452 people were employed in the energy industry, and it is expected that 232,189 personnel demands will be created over the next 10 years until 2030. This figure includes workers in all sectors such as energy efficiency improvement, power systems, new and renewable energy, and fossil fuels. It is expected that there will be an annual average shortage of 756 master's and doctoral-level and 1,279 bachelor's-level technical personnel over the next 10 years. This means that personnel performing research, technical, service, and management roles in the energy industry will be insufficient by that amount. According to the Jobs Committee, the government produced 4,563 master's and doctoral graduates in the energy industry from 2017 to 2020. In the new and renewable energy sector, 778 talents were nurtured. The budget for energy personnel training has shown an average annual increase of 13% over the past three years from 2019 to this year, and next year, 46.4 billion KRW has been allocated, which is 2.67% more than this year.
The government has prepared an energy technology personnel training plan consisting of three major strategies and ten tasks. The goal is to produce 20,000 energy innovation talents by 2030. By 2025, it plans to nurture 8,000 people, including 3,000 research personnel and 5,000 field experts. To this end, it plans to establish more than 10 Energy Innovation Research Centers by 2025 to cultivate top-level talents in new and renewable energy fields where maintaining a super-gap or localization is urgent. Currently, there are five energy convergence graduate schools at Jeonbuk National University, GIST, Pusan National University, Gachon University, and Chung-Ang University, and the plan is to increase this to more than 15 by 2025. The annual scale of talent training is expected to increase from 85 this year to 235 next year and 500 by 2025.
