First Female Mayor Elected in Berlin After Reunification
[Asia Economy Reporter Bu Aeri] The Berlin City Council in Germany held a plenary session on the 21st (local time) and elected Franziska Giffey, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) mayoral candidate, as the Mayor of Berlin.
Mayor Giffey received 84 votes out of 139 participants in the vote among 147 total members.
Mayor Giffey is the first female mayor since the reunification of East and West Germany. Between 1949 and 1951, when Berlin was divided into East and West after World War II, Louise Schroeder served as the Mayor of West Berlin.
