Daily Average Student COVID-19 Cases Shift to Decline

On the 21st, the Ministry of Education announced that from the 16th to the 20th, a total of 3,928 confirmed cases were reported among kindergarten, elementary, middle, and high school students, averaging 785.6 cases per day. The cumulative number of confirmed student cases is 58,334.
Since the school density was adjusted to two-thirds starting this week, as of 10 a.m. on the day, 96.9% (19,820 schools) of the 20,447 schools nationwide conducted in-person classes. Remote classes were held at 270 schools (1.3%), and 357 schools (1.7%) took discretionary holidays or other measures.
Among all students, 4.65 million (78.4%) attended in-person classes. In the Seoul metropolitan area, 96.7% (7,484 out of 7,743 schools) held in-person classes, while in non-metropolitan areas, 97.1% (12,336 out of 12,704 schools) conducted in-person classes.
The number of confirmed student cases by region over the five days is as follows: Gyeonggi 1,347, Seoul 848, Incheon 308, Busan 294, Chungnam 187, Gyeongnam 168, Gyeongbuk 139, Daegu 121, and Jeonbuk 108.
The Ministry of Education operates care classrooms for students who do not attend school but require care, based on school conditions and considering academic operation plans by city and province. After-school programs are also operated through remote or blended (remote and on-site mixed) methods in connection with academic operations.
There were 345 confirmed cases among school staff over five days, averaging 69.0 cases per day. The cumulative number of confirmed staff cases is 4,449.

Among university students, there were a total of 306 confirmed cases over five days, averaging 61.2 cases per day. In the previous week (9th to 15th), there were 541 confirmed university student cases, averaging 67 cases per day. Confirmed cases among university staff over five days totaled 78, averaging 15.6 cases per day, an increase compared to the previous week (average 12.6 cases per day).
