Pohang City Signs Agreement to Promote Advanced Marine Industry R&D Center
Completion in March Next Year, Equipped with Complex Facilities from Research Labs to Experience Spaces
Pohang City and 8 Institutions Including the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology Sign Information and Technology Sharing Agreement
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Trainee Reporter Lee Seryeong] Pohang City in Gyeongbuk signed a business agreement on the 20th at Pohang Technopark to activate the Advanced Marine Industry R&D Center, a core project of the Pohang Port Old Port Urban Regeneration New Deal Project.
The Pohang Port Old Port Urban Regeneration New Deal Project is a project approved by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in July 2019, with national support decided. A total of 954.2 billion KRW will be invested over six years until 2024 to build the Advanced Marine Industry R&D Center, create a complex cultural and artistic experience hub, and implement port redevelopment projects.
The Advanced Marine Industry R&D Center will be constructed with a project cost of 19.7 billion KRW by March next year in the Songdo-dong area of Nam-gu, covering a total area of 9,449㎡, with 10 floors from one basement level to nine above ground.
It will be developed to include research facilities for R&D, convenience facilities for researchers, marine leisure sports-related facilities, shared conference rooms, and marine industry experience spaces.
Participants in the agreement ceremony included Pohang City, POSTECH, Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST), KIRO, Small and Medium Shipbuilding Research Institute, Hanil News, Busan Technopark, and Pohang Technopark.
The eight organizations agreed to exchange information and cooperate in technology implementation to activate the R&D Center.
Pohang City plans to create a test bed space for prototypes of companies based on new marine industries and a marine leisure sports equipment experience space at Songdo Beach, providing an environment where research and testing are free and businesses can take on challenges.

A city official said, “We will discover future strategic growth industries, nurture companies, and lay the foundation for diversifying the industrial structure,” adding, “We plan to leap forward as a sustainable advanced marine industry hub city through technology development and startup activation in the advanced marine industry sector.”
