Army Officer in His 40s on Trial Commits Suicide in Detention Center
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] A 40-year-old officer belonging to an Army unit, who was on trial for sexual offense charges, died by suicide.
According to military authorities on the 20th, Sergeant A was found unconscious in the shower room of the Daegu Military Police Detention Center at around 5:40 PM on the 19th.
Sergeant A was urgently transported to a nearby civilian hospital but passed away around 9 AM on the 20th.
It is known that Sergeant A was indicted for unlawfully entering the off-base accommodation of a 20-year-old female officer in Cheongsong, Gyeongbuk, last April.
An Army official stated, "This is an ongoing trial case, and due to concerns about secondary harm, we cannot disclose further details," adding, "Since the incident occurred in the shower room, it was difficult to detect in real time in consideration of human rights protection."
