Huawei Selected as the Company with the Most 5G Patents in German Investigation
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] Huawei has been selected as the company holding the most 5G patents worldwide.
On the 15th, German patent information analysis firm IPlytics published the report "Who Leads the 5G Patent Race," announcing that Huawei holds the largest number of 5G patents globally.
According to the report, Huawei ranked first with a 15.93% share in the global valid 5G patents sector. Following Huawei were LG Electronics (10.79%), Samsung Electronics (10.55%), Qualcomm (10.44%), and Nokia (9.74%).
In addition to patent data, the report evaluated companies' various contributions to 5G development and innovation by analyzing scientific journals and other publications, regulatory changes and recommendations, and technical contributions to new standards. In this survey as well, Huawei led with a 21.64% contribution rate, ahead of Ericsson (17.52%) and Nokia (12.89%).
This report analyzed the importance of 5G patents across various industrial sectors. IPlytics uses its proprietary intellectual property information tools to rank 5G patents and innovative companies, providing some data related to this technological competition.
Globally, revenue generated from standard essential patent (SEP) licenses in the 5G field reached approximately $20 billion (about 23.71 trillion KRW) as of last year. The report predicted that both the number of 5G SEPs and the revenue generated from them will significantly increase in industries such as automotive, energy, and healthcare.
According to IPlytics, within the next five years, half of the global data traffic is expected to come from vehicles, machines, meters, sensors, medical devices, and online connected devices that interact without human involvement rather than from people.
