Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education Supports Admission Preparation Funds for New Elementary, Middle, and High School Students
Elementary Students 100,000 Won, Middle and High School Students 250,000 Won
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Cho Hyung-joo] The Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education announced on the 15th that it will provide entrance preparation funds to new students in elementary, middle, and high schools within its jurisdiction starting from 2022.
The support targets approximately 42,000 elementary, middle, and high school students within the jurisdiction of the Office of Education.
The amount of support per student is 100,000 KRW for elementary students and 250,000 KRW for middle and high school students.
The entrance preparation fund support was established to strengthen the public nature of education and realize universal educational welfare. New students in elementary, middle, and high schools (including various schools and special schools) within Gwangju can use the entrance preparation funds to purchase clothing needed for enrollment, smart devices for remote classes, books, and more.
The budget for this entrance support fund project is 8.522 billion KRW, with the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education, Gwangju City, and autonomous districts bearing 55%, 25%, and 20% of the costs respectively.
Since July, the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education, Gwangju City, and autonomous districts have continuously held consultations and finally agreed to provide entrance preparation funds starting in 2022.
The entrance preparation fund was first implemented this year by the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education targeting middle and high school students, and the project including elementary students will be first implemented nationwide next year by the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education.
Superintendent Jang Hwi-guk said, "I hope that the entrance preparation fund support will alleviate the economic burden on new students' households, which has become difficult due to COVID-19, even if only a little."
