Wando-gun to Establish Joint Marine Bio Research Institute in October Next Year

[Wando＝Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Kyung-pil] Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do, is actively promoting the construction of the "Marine Bio Joint Cooperation Research Institute" to establish a marine bio-industry ecosystem.

According to the county on the 13th, the "Marine Bio Joint Cooperation Research Institute" is a space for joint cooperative research among domestic and international universities, companies, and research institutions related to marine bio.

This project is part of the "Marine Healing Blue Zone Creation Project," which was selected as a pilot project for regional development investment agreements by the National Balanced Development Committee in 2019.

The Marine Bio Joint Cooperation Research Institute will be built on a site in Daegok-ri, Sinji-myeon, Wando-gun, with a total investment of 10.2 billion KRW. It will be a three-story building with a total area of 3,297㎡, scheduled to begin construction in December this year and aimed for completion in October next year.

The institute will include a shared laboratory equipped with seaweed efficacy analysis equipment, research and experimental facilities such as animal cell culture rooms and microbial culture rooms, research support facilities like a library and conference rooms, as well as corporate research facilities and startup spaces.

Once established, the institute plans to attract 10 corporate research centers and 30 startups.

County Governor Shin Woo-cheol said, "Through the construction of the Marine Bio Joint Cooperation Research Institute, we will do our best to promote the project so that it can contribute to job creation and regional economic revitalization by leading the seaweed industry into a high value-added industry through performance creation and strengthening technological competitiveness via future technological cooperation."
