New Confirmed Cases 6,977, Around 7,000 for Four Consecutive Days... Record High 80 Deaths
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] Following the phased implementation of daily life recovery, the spread of COVID-19 has intensified, with the number of new confirmed cases on the 11th approaching 7,000. The number of deaths reached 80, the highest since the COVID-19 outbreak, and the number of critically ill patients was 856, the second largest scale recorded.
The Central Disease Control Headquarters announced that as of midnight on this day, there were 6,977 new confirmed cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 510,583.
The number of new confirmed cases was 45 fewer than the previous day (7,022), but it has remained around 7,000 for four consecutive days since the 8th. This day’s new confirmed cases marked the first time the Friday count fell into the 6,000 range and was the highest number recorded for a Friday. Compared to last Friday’s confirmed cases (5,352, announced on Saturday the 4th), it is 1,625 more.
Due to the transition in the quarantine system last month, quarantine rules were significantly relaxed and social activities increased, gradually expanding the scale of confirmed cases. Especially with the onset of winter, which is favorable for virus spread, and the introduction of the Omicron variant, a new COVID-19 variant known for faster transmissibility, the spread is likely to accelerate further.
The number of deaths the previous day was 80, the highest figure in the domestic COVID-19 situation over the past two years. The previous highest record was 70 on the 4th, so the record was broken within a week. Accordingly, the cumulative number of COVID-19 deaths in the country reached 4,210. The average fatality rate is 0.82%.
The number of critically ill patients was 856 on this day, an increase of 4 from the previous day (852), marking the second largest scale ever recorded. The number of critically ill patients reached a record high of 857 on the 9th and has remained in the 800s for four consecutive days.
