Number of Taiwan's Diplomatic Allies Drops to 14 Countries
[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Jo Young-shin] China has established diplomatic relations with the Central American country, the Republic of Nicaragua, according to the state-run Xinhua News Agency on the 10th. Xinhua added that the Republic of Nicaragua has severed diplomatic ties with Taiwan.
Xinhua explained that China and the Republic of Nicaragua signed a joint statement on establishing diplomatic relations and agreed to resume diplomatic ties in accordance with the interests and hopes of their peoples.
It further stated that the two governments agreed to develop friendly relations based on the principles of mutual respect, mutual non-aggression, and non-interference in internal affairs, as well as equality and reciprocity.
Xinhua emphasized that the Republic of Nicaragua recognized that there is only one China in the world and that the Chinese government is the sole legal government representing all of China, confirming that Taiwan is part of China's territory.
It also reported that the government of the Republic of Nicaragua promised to immediately sever diplomatic relations with Taiwan, not to establish any official relations with Taiwan, and not to engage in any official exchanges.
