UN Secretary-General Attends Beijing Olympics Amid Western Boycott
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] As Western countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom have declared a diplomatic boycott (refusal to send diplomatic delegations) of the Beijing Winter Olympics next year, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed his intention to attend.
UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told reporters on the 9th (local time) that "Secretary-General Guterres has accepted the invitation from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to attend the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics," AFP reported.
The United States declared a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Olympics on the 6th, citing human rights abuses in China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Subsequently, New Zealand on the 7th, and Australia, the United Kingdom, and Canada on the 8th joined the boycott.

China hinted at retaliation. Wang Wenbin, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said, "The United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Canada using the Olympics for political manipulation is a path to self-isolation," adding, "These countries will definitely pay the price for their mistakes."
