On the 10th, Hannam University announced that architecture students Han Hye-in, Yoo Ji-eun, and Bae Chi-won won the grand prize, while Kim Ji-yoon and Jung Hye-in received excellence awards at the International Studio.
The city of Daegu, which organized the International Studio, visited Hannam University the day before to hold an awards ceremony and presented the winners with prize money and plaques.
The International Studio has been held annually since 2018 as part of Daegu’s international cooperation, with participation from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany and Seoul National University.
The students who won the grand prize conducted urban design focusing on the Murim Paper Mill area. Reflecting the 100-year history of Korea’s paper industry and the characteristics of the region where the company is located, the urban design process sought to find a link connecting the past, present, and future to promote mutual development.
By redesigning existing facilities to introduce related programs such as galleries, artist studios, and residences, allowing the factory and residential facilities to harmonize, they designed a new complex cultural space in Daegu, which was a positive factor in winning the grand prize at the International Studio.
Additionally, the excellence award winners proposed an urban regeneration master plan and a new complex cultural commercial facility to unlock the development potential of Chilseong Market, a representative traditional market in the Daegu area, earning high scores.
