Hanmi Semiconductor Receives $200 Million Export Tower Award
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyungsoo Park] Hanmi Semiconductor, a semiconductor equipment developer, announced on the 6th that it received the $200 million Export Tower award at the '58th Trade Day' ceremony held at COEX in Samseong-dong, Seoul.
Founded in 1980, Hanmi Semiconductor is a semiconductor equipment company recognized by over 320 global customers by securing proprietary technology through continuous research and development aimed at domestic production of semiconductor equipment. Demand for system semiconductor equipment from foundries including TSMC and global IC companies is continuously increasing. Over the past 10 years, the export ratio has exceeded an average of 77% of total sales. The company has established a mass production system through vertical integration from design to parts processing, software, assembly, and inspection processes, applying vibration-free iron casting (casting platform).
Hanmi Semiconductor Vice Chairman and CEO Kwak Dong-shin explained, "The $200 million Export Tower award is the first in 11 years since the $100 million award in 2010," adding, "This achievement was made in an extremely contracted domestic and international trade environment due to the US-China trade dispute and the COVID-19 pandemic."
He continued, "The biggest success factor was anticipating the large-scale investments by global semiconductor companies and the expansion of semiconductor outsourcing assembly and test (OSAT) companies, and proactively investing to establish a semiconductor equipment production system consisting of four factories."
Hanmi Semiconductor's large-scale equipment production cluster was built with an investment of about 54 billion KRW over the past three years, including the newly opened micro SAW dedicated factory in June this year at Juan National Industrial Complex in Seo-gu, Incheon. It has the capacity to produce up to 2,400 units annually.
Through the production cluster, the company can produce various equipment such as the micro SAW & Vision Placement (MSVP), a world market-leading equipment successfully localized in June, the EMI shield line adopted by global companies, and the TC bonder applied to semiconductor 3D packages like multichip and chiplet. They are also establishing production lines for new equipment such as the 'strip grinder,' which processes substrates used in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) glasses, as well as inspection equipment. Uncommonly in the semiconductor equipment market, Hanmi Semiconductor operates its own parts processing factory that directly manufactures essential parts required for producing major equipment.

According to the global consulting firm Boston Consulting Group, foundry prices are expected to steadily increase until 2023. System semiconductors account for about 90% of Hanmi Semiconductor's total sales. The growth of the global semiconductor market and the expansion of system semiconductor and foundry scales are expected to positively impact Hanmi Semiconductor's future performance improvement.
