Assemblyman Yongbin Lee Secures Large-Scale National Funding for Gwangju's Future Strategic Industries and More
AI Integrated Complex Development Project and Related Matters Including Yeongsangang Y Project
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Congressman Lee Yong-bin (Democratic Party of Korea·Gwangju Gwangsan-gu Gap) secured a large amount of national budget in the 2022 budget session to strengthen the competitiveness of Gwangju Metropolitan City's future strategic industries and new growth engine industries.
As the only member of the Science, Technology, Information and Broadcasting and Communications Committee from the Gwangju-Jeonnam region, Congressman Lee has continuously worked to secure budgets for large-scale research facilities in the Gwangju-Jeonnam area.
Newly reflected budgets include 1 billion KRW for the preliminary feasibility study planning research for the establishment of the National High Magnetic Field Research Institute in Gwangju, 1.5 billion KRW for ultra-high-power laser technology development and infrastructure construction research in Jeonnam, and 4 billion KRW for the construction of superconducting conductor test facilities (R&D) at KEPCO Energy University.
For the ongoing project to create an AI integrated complex, a future food industry of Gwangju, 66.69 billion KRW was secured, and the Hub-Spoke based convergent brain research project was increased by 700 million KRW to a total of 1.5 billion KRW.
Four new projects focusing on AI education, national healthcare, and R&D will receive a total investment of 16.45 billion KRW.
Budgets were allocated for nationwide specialized AI education at 4.2 billion KRW, the K-Health national healthcare AI service industry ecosystem construction project at 8 billion KRW, the technology commercialization collaboration platform construction R&D innovation valley fostering project at 2.25 billion KRW, and the digital twin-based urban flood smart response system construction project at 2 billion KRW.
Additionally, to stably promote the air industry, which will become a new industrial engine in our region, 16.27 billion KRW was secured in cooperation with Gwangju City.
The government budget secured includes 14.2 billion KRW for the clean air industry cluster creation project and 2.07 billion KRW for the eco-friendly air industry cultivation foundation construction project.
Congressman Lee stated, “The 296 billion KRW indoor air quality management improvement technology development project passed the Ministry of Science and ICT’s technical review and was selected as the third preliminary feasibility study target in November 2021. The main feasibility study is currently underway, with results expected by the end of May next year.”
He added, “If the project passes the preliminary feasibility study next year, it will greatly help revitalize the local economy by replacing the white goods industry, which is currently in a slump in the region. I will do my best to ensure the project passes the main feasibility study.”
Meanwhile, Congressman Lee is preparing the Y Project, which will lead the development of the southwestern area of Gwangju by linking the nature, history, culture, and tourism resources of the Yeongsan River Forum as well as the Yeongsan and Hwangryong Rivers.
He newly secured 420 million KRW for the Bitgoeul Yeongsan River Renaissance Theme Park creation project and 100 million KRW for the Yeongsan River resident waterfront space reinforcement project in next year’s national budget.

As local constituency projects, national budgets were secured for the Gwangju Songjeong Station expansion project at 10 billion KRW, the construction of the 1st public parking tower in Gwangsan-gu at 1.77 billion KRW, the drainage improvement project in Yeonsan district at 2 billion KRW, the installation of buffer retention facilities in Pyeongdong industrial complex at 3.2 billion KRW, the Central Asia history-themed tourism district creation project at 1 billion KRW, the small library creation project within the Songjeong-dong complex community center at 110 million KRW, the installation of artificial turf at Wolgok tennis court at 100 million KRW, the opening of the Bitgreen industrial complex access road at 1 billion KRW, the construction of the labor-management mutual support center within the Bitgreen industrial complex at 9 billion KRW, the creation of the industry-academia convergence district at 1.5 billion KRW, and the road construction of Dosan-dong Daero 2-19 line at 1.85 billion KRW.
