Jeju Island Establishes 'Road Snow Removal Response System' to Prepare for Heavy Snow in Winter

[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Park Chang-won] Jeju Special Self-Governing Province announced on the 30th that it is establishing a systematic, province-centered road snow removal response system to proactively respond to heavy snow disasters during the winter season.

Since the pre-preparation period for snow removal measures began on the 15th of last month, Jeju Province has conducted a comprehensive maintenance of snow removal equipment and completed the placement of sandbags in slopes and shaded areas of local roads in mountainous and mid-mountainous regions (18 local road routes, 2,300 locations).

Starting from the 1st of next month, a full-scale integrated winter snow removal situation room will be operated.

In particular, from this year, three snow removal forward bases will be operated in Nohyeong-dong and Gyorae-ri, Jocheon-eup, which is expected to provide optimal road usage services by shortening the travel time of snow removal vehicles and strengthening on-site response capabilities during road snow removal operations.

The province plans to lease six private snow removal equipment units to be immediately deployed for on-site snow removal work in case of heavy snowfall and icing on roads such as Pyeonghwa-ro, Beonyeong-ro, and Namjo-ro located in mid-mountainous areas after working hours, with three units fixedly assigned per route in the eastern and western parts.

Earlier, on the 29th of last month, Jeju Province held a road snow removal countermeasure meeting with administrative city road management departments, Jeju Police Agency, Autonomous Police Corps, transportation-related departments, and the Korea Meteorological Administration to promote rapid and efficient snow removal operations through inter-agency cooperation.

Lee Chang-min, Director of the Urban Construction Bureau, said, “During heavy snowfall, we ask village snow removal teams and local organizations to support snow removal on side roads, and we hope citizens will take the lead in clearing snow in front of their homes and stores. Especially during snowfall, please actively cooperate by using public transportation and operating vehicles equipped with winter tires.”
