Jeongeup-si Selected as an Excellent Institution for Revitalizing Traditional Markets... The Only One in Jeonbuk

[Jeongeup=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Jae-gil] Jeongeup City, Jeonbuk Province (Mayor Yoo Jin-seop) announced on the 30th that it was selected as an excellent institution in the ‘2021 Traditional Market Revitalization Merit Awards’ hosted by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups.

The Ministry of SMEs and Startups selected 12 excellent local governments in this evaluation, and Jeongeup City was the only one selected in Jeollabuk-do.

The city invested 1 billion KRW in the traditional market facility modernization project, improving outdated fire-fighting facilities and exposed wiring to create a safe and pleasant traditional market environment.

To overcome the limitations of traditional markets and secure self-sustainability, the city also invested 360 million KRW in a cultural tourism-type market contest project.

Along with this, efforts to present a new model for revitalizing traditional markets were recognized by promoting cultural tourism-linked projects such as night markets and the Wagle Wagle Singing Contest.

The city especially supported traditional markets with quarantine supplies such as masks and disinfectants in response to COVID-19, and thoroughly carried out prevention and quarantine measures including self-disinfection and fever checks.

Also, to support merchants struggling with operations due to the spread of COVID-19, Mayor Yoo Jin-seop and Jeongeup City Hall officials have led traditional market revitalization by holding shopping events every holiday annually.

The city was honored as an excellent institution for various efforts such as installing fire detection facilities for rapid response in case of traditional market fires.

Mayor Yoo Jin-seop said, “I am pleased that Jeongeup City’s tireless efforts to revitalize traditional markets have been recognized externally,” and added, “We will continue to do our best to ensure that people can visit traditional markets with peace of mind through thorough quarantine and hygiene management.”

Meanwhile, the Ministry of SMEs and Startups annually selects and awards outstanding merchants, excellent institutions, and markets that have contributed to the revitalization of traditional markets and shopping districts.
