1st Anniversary of the '2050 Carbon Neutrality Goal' Declaration... Operation of the 'Whole-Government Carbon Neutrality Week'
Various Practice Campaigns Launched to Enhance Public Awareness and Promote a Culture of Action
[Asia Economy Reporter Joo Sang-don] To commemorate the 1st anniversary of the declaration of the 2050 carbon neutrality goal, the Ministry of Environment announced on the 30th that it will operate 'Carbon Neutrality Week' from the 6th to the 10th of next month in collaboration with the Carbon Neutrality Committee, 17 government ministries, and local governments.
This Carbon Neutrality Week will be promoted as a communication platform where the government, local governments, and public institutions lead and citizens participate together under the theme "Before It's Too Late, 2050 Carbon Neutrality."
The opening ceremony marking the start of Carbon Neutrality Week will be held on the morning of December 6 at the Culture Storage Base in Mapo-gu, Seoul. About 50 people from various sectors including the government, businesses, civil society, and students will attend. At the opening ceremony, Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum will proclaim 'Carbon Neutrality Week' and emphasize that carbon neutrality is a path that must be taken for current and future generations. At this event, Prime Minister Kim will stress that if all members of society participate and take action, the crisis can be turned into an opportunity, and he will propose a public campaign activity called 'Clearing Unnecessary Mailboxes (Digital Carbon Diet)' that all citizens can participate in during Carbon Neutrality Week. This activity aims to reduce greenhouse gases generated during information storage by deleting unnecessary emails such as advertisements.
During Carbon Neutrality Week, various activities such as practice movements and campaigns tailored to the characteristics of each ministry's work will also be conducted. At the event 'The Leading Generation of 2050 Youth Speak (hosted by the Office for Government Policy Coordination)' held on December 9, about 100 young people who will be the main actors in Korean society in 2050 will gather to discuss topics such as 'Youth's own action plans,' 'Youth demands to the older generation,' 'Government's role for carbon neutrality,' and 'South Korea's role in the international community,' thereby conveying the voices of youth to the government.
On the last day of Carbon Neutrality Week, December 10, the 'Dialogue with Carbon Neutral Leading Companies (hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy)' will be held, where about 30 representatives from the industrial and energy sectors, key pillars in realizing a carbon-neutral society, will attend to discuss strategies for carbon neutrality transition goals (vision) and share opinions from the industrial sector.
