View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] On Tuesday the 30th, a cold front will pass through South Korea bringing rain, and from the 1st, morning temperatures will drop below freezing.
On the 29th, the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) held an unscheduled briefing and forecasted that a long cold front moving from west to east across the country will bring strong winds and snow and rain nationwide, resulting in cold weather continuing until the 5th.
From early morning to morning on the 30th, strong rain accompanied by gusts and thunder and lightning will pour at a rate of 10 to 20mm per hour in the western regions including the Seoul metropolitan area.
Rainfall of 20 to 60mm is expected in Jirisan, the southern coast, and Jeju Island, while other areas will receive about 5 to 40mm. In the low-temperature mountainous areas of Gangwon and Jeju, snow accumulation of 2 to 7cm is expected, and the predicted snowfall in the inland areas of Gangwon and Chungcheong is 1 to 3cm. Rain will mostly stop by the evening of the 30th in most regions, but in Jeolla Province, it is expected to continue until the afternoon of the 1st.
Han Sang-eun, a meteorological expert at the KMA, explained, "Rain will begin in the west from early morning on the 30th, with heavy rain around 9 a.m. during the morning commute in Seoul. After 3 p.m., the cold front will be positioned over the East Sea, causing drizzle or snow flurries in some areas along with strong winds and falling temperatures. On the morning commute of the 1st, icy roads are expected due to the previous day’s precipitation and subzero temperatures, so traffic safety should be carefully observed."
As a low-pressure system and cold front pass through South Korea, storm warnings are expected to be issued for all seas, with some areas under storm alerts.
The KMA has issued preliminary storm warnings for the distant West Sea early on the 30th, the distant Jeju Sea in the morning of the 30th, and most seas in the morning of the 30th.
Strong winds and gusts may cause damage in coastal and adjacent inland areas, so special attention should be paid to the management of outdoor facilities such as screening clinics. The KMA has also issued preliminary strong wind warnings for the West Sea Five Islands in the morning of the 30th and for areas adjacent to the East and West coasts in the morning of the 30th.
After the rain and snow stop, temperatures will drop sharply, with the lowest morning temperature on the 1st falling below freezing. The morning low on the 1st is expected to drop to as low as -6 degrees Celsius. There is a possibility that a cold wave warning will be issued for eastern Gyeonggi Province and some parts of Gangwon Province.
The morning lows on the 1st will be -3 degrees Celsius in Seoul, -5 degrees in Chuncheon, -3 degrees in Suwon, and -1 degree in Daejeon. From the 2nd to the 5th, most areas will continue to experience subzero morning temperatures, with temperatures recovering to above freezing in most areas including Seoul from the 6th.
There is a possibility of snow in the Seoul metropolitan area on Thursday the 2nd. According to the medium-term forecast, the central region will be mostly cloudy and overcast on the afternoon of the 2nd, with rain or snow expected on the morning of the 3rd in the Seoul metropolitan area, Gangwon Yeongseo, Daejeon, Chungbuk, Chungnam, Jeonbuk, Gwangju, and Jeonnam.
