According to the county on the 25th, the LNG Future Forum, jointly hosted by the offices of Assemblymen Seo Sam-seok, Kim Won-i, Shin Jeong-hoon, and Song Gap-seok, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Jeollanam-do, Yeongam-gun, the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology, and the Cryogenic Insulation System Research Center at Mokpo National University, was attended by over 40 related organizations and companies including government, local governments, shipbuilding and marine companies, international classification societies, academia, and research institutes to prepare for the future of the shipbuilding and marine industry such as future LNG ship technologies and eco-friendly ship technology development.
The government has declared next year as the inaugural year of carbon neutrality and is preparing for a transition to an eco-friendly economy. The shipbuilding industry is also planning to respond to climate change and international environmental regulations and develop eco-friendly ship technologies by developing LNG cryogenic cargo tanks and domestic production of materials and components, as well as eco-friendly fuel propulsion ships using hydrogen and ammonia to maintain international competitiveness in the eco-friendly ship market.
In line with this, the forum was launched to establish a close network for technology sharing and collaboration to enhance the technological capabilities of next-generation LNG ships, including the entry of Korean-style LNG cargo tanks into the global market and localization of key materials and components, with major domestic shipyards, domestic and international research institutions, and expert engineers, securing future technologies in preparation for the carbon-neutral era.
The event concluded with welcoming and congratulatory speeches from key figures, thematic presentations on ‘Future Technologies of LNG Ships and Eco-friendly Ship Technology Support Roadmap’ by participating organizations and companies, and a panel discussion on ‘Strategies to Strengthen Korea’s LNG Ship Technological Competitiveness’ to seek solutions to various current issues.
Assemblymen Seo Sam-seok, Kim Won-i, Shin Jeong-hoon, and Song Gap-seok said in their welcoming remarks, “Through the LNG Future Forum launched today, the Korean-style LNG cargo tank will surely enter the global market, and the core technologies of high value-added LNG ships will develop international competitiveness befitting Korea’s status as a leading maritime nation. The National Assembly will spare no support in this regard.”
Jeon Dong-pyeong, Mayor of Yeongam-gun, stated, “Taking advantage of the LNG cargo tank localization demonstration project designated by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, we will spare no support for building a research foundation and technology development to create a materials and components cluster for future eco-friendly ships such as LNG cryogenic cargo tanks and hydrogen and ammonia ships in the Daebul National Industrial Complex.”
Meanwhile, Yeongam-gun was finally selected in May for the ‘LNG Cryogenic Insulation System Demonstration Infrastructure Construction’ project in collaboration with Jeollanam-do and Mokpo National University.
