Samsung Display to Hold 'QD OLED' Mass Production Shipment Ceremony on the 30th... Full-Scale Supply Begins
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] Samsung Display will hold a mass production shipment ceremony for its next-generation display, Quantum Dot Organic Light Emitting Diode (QD-OLED), on the 30th.
According to industry sources on the 23rd, Samsung Display will hold the QD-OLED mass production shipment ceremony at its 8.5-generation (2200×2500 mm) Q1 line at the Asan Campus in Chungnam and supply it to its customers. Currently, Samsung Electronics is considered one of the major customers of Samsung Display's QD-OLED. Samsung Display produces 30,000 units per month at the Asan Q1 line.
Based on this, Samsung Electronics plans to showcase new QD-OLED TV products at CES 2022, the world's largest electronics and IT exhibition held in Las Vegas, USA, in January next year. Considering Samsung Display's QD-OLED production volume, it is expected that Samsung Electronics, as a major customer, will be able to manufacture hundreds of thousands of QD-OLED TVs annually during the initial launch phase.
The Q1 line, which is starting panel shipments this time, began equipment installation for mass production in August last year and started pilot production from the end of last year. Subsequently, the pilot-produced panels were sent to each customer for suitability evaluation, and after the final customer selection, full-scale mass production reportedly began this month.

Once Samsung Display begins full-scale supply of QD-OLED, it is expected to bring changes to the large OLED TV market structure currently dominated by LG Display. Samsung Display plans to lead the large display business through the development of next-generation QD-OLED technology and stable expansion of mass production. In last month's Q3 earnings conference call, Samsung Display stated, "Our QD display has many advantages over existing products in terms of color gamut, viewing angle, and brightness, and we expect it to become a new standard in the premium TV market," adding, "We will continue efforts to stably transition our large business to focus on QD displays in the future."
