Gokseong Toran Tteok Pie, Spotlighted as a Healthy and Delicious Signature Food

[Gokseong=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Cha Jong-sun] Healthy and delicious ‘Toran Tteok Pie’ is gaining attention as a representative local delicacy of Gokseong-gun, Jeollanam-do.

Toran Tteok Pie is a taro processed product independently developed by Gokseong-gun (Governor Yoo Geun-gi) to increase the consumption of glutinous rice and taro. It is a healthy dessert product that contains no flour or synthetic additives.

Based on the characteristic of taro, which does not harden well, the manufacturing technology was patented in May 2021 after about two years of examination. Initially named ‘Toran Pie’ during development, the name was changed to ‘Toran Tteok Pie’ to easily appeal to consumers, meaning a pie with the texture of tteok (rice cake) preserved.

Toran Tteok Pie has a chewy texture and is topped with the finest taro from Gokseong as well as nuts. It also has a moderate sweetness and a savory taste, making it a snack that satisfies people of all ages.

Based on these advantages, the county is nurturing Toran Tteok Pie as a representative local snack, actively promoting packaging improvements and publicity through the One City One Specialty Project to increase sales.

Recently, at the 1st Jeollanam-do Governor’s Cup National Gokseong Mountain Bike Competition (MTB) held from the 20th to the 21st, Toran Tteok Pie was distributed to about 450 participants, receiving enthusiastic responses.

Meanwhile, the Agricultural Technology Center has been steadily transferring Toran Tteok Pie technology to farmers and processing companies wishing to process taro.

Among them, five companies?Jamaega, Garangdeu, Gokseong Daum, Ariul Bokddeokbang, and Cafe Sonamu?are selling Toran Tteok Pie both online and offline, and additional local companies for processing and sales are being sought to plan new technology transfers.

An official from the Agricultural Technology Center said, “Toran Tteok Pie is a healthy and delicious dessert that anyone can enjoy, with a high repurchase rate and perfect as a gift.” He added, “We will do our best to develop additional specialized stores so that when people think of Gokseong, they think of Toran Tteok Pie, a unique product only available in Gokseong.”
