"Addition of Messenger Accounts and Email Addresses" Personal Information Commission Expands Cyber Fraud Report Inquiry Scope
Personal Information Commission Signs Business Agreement with Police Agency, Danggeun Market, Bungaejangter, and Junggonara
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] Starting at the end of next month, the system will be improved to allow citizens to check the mobile messenger accounts and email addresses used in fraudulent transactions through the Cyber Investigation Bureau website of the National Police Agency and the 'Cyber Fraud Damage Report History Inquiry' service on the CyberCop application. From next year, suspicious fraudulent transactions will be automatically blocked on peer-to-peer trading platforms.
The Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC), the National Police Agency, and peer-to-peer trading platforms Danggeun Market, Bungaejangter, and Junggonara signed a business agreement on the 22nd at the National Police Agency to prevent cyber fraud damage.
This service expansion was made as peer-to-peer trading platform operators suggested information sharing between government agencies to prevent fraud damage through KakaoTalk and other means while preparing 'measures to prevent and remedy personal information leakage damage' amid the continuous increase in internet fraud cases. The number of internet fraud cases, which was 92,636 in 2017, nearly doubled to 174,328 last year.
The PIPC established the institutional basis, and the National Police Agency improved the system so that from the end of December this year, when users check suspicious phone numbers, account numbers, mobile messenger accounts, and email addresses through CyberCop, they can confirm the history of cyber fraud damage reports filed three or more times in the past three months.
Yoon Jong-in, Chairman of the PIPC, said, "Today's agreement ceremony is a meaningful occasion prepared to preemptively block online fraud transaction damage and prevent additional harm," adding, "We will continue to do our best to create an environment where citizens can safely use online services from fraud through cooperation between related industries and the government."

Kim Chang-ryong, Commissioner of the National Police Agency, said, "With the advancement of IT technology and the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic leading to a non-face-to-face society, cyber fraud crimes are also rapidly increasing," and added, "I hope today's agreement ceremony will serve as an opportunity to prevent cyber fraud damage through public-private cooperation."
