Jeonnam Governor Kim Young-rok Holds Dialogue with Residents in Damyang... Promises Support for Stay-type Tourism
Governor Kim: "Damyang to be Developed as a Hub for Ecological and Cultural City"
[Damyang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] On the 19th, Jeonnam Governor Kim Young-rok visited Damyang County and engaged in a dialogue with residents, promising “support for stay-type tourism” and “development of an ecological and cultural city center,” the governor’s office announced on the 21st.
About 190 people participated in the dialogue with residents, including Governor Kim Young-rok, Damyang County Mayor Choi Hyung-sik, County Council Chairman Kim Jung-oh, Provincial Assembly member Park Jong-won, with around 40 people on-site and about 150 online.
Governor Kim said, “To develop Damyang, the source of the Yeongsan River, the lifeline of Honam, and a hometown of gardens and humanities, we will foster it as an ecological and cultural city through the world-important agricultural heritage bamboo forest, the iconic Metasequoia Road known for its beautiful tree-lined streets, and the creation of cultural streets.”
To this end, Jeonnam Province will focus all efforts on expanding the road network, promoting residents’ traffic convenience and improving logistics and tourism accessibility through the expansion and widening of local and provincial roads in Damyang County.
The local road No. 60 section from Goseo to Changpyeong in Damyang was included in the 5th National and Local Road Construction Plan (2021?2025) last October and will be expanded to four lanes. Support systems will be strengthened to ensure timely completion of provincial roads such as Goseo IC to Gwangju Dam and Mujeong to Sunchang.
In particular, to revitalize the local economy through the full-scale promotion of the “Visit Jeollanam-do Year” next year, efforts will be accelerated to establish a stay-type tourism infrastructure in Damyang County to prepare for accommodating tourists.
Governor Kim stated, “We will utilize the Dambit Outdoor Music Hall construction, expand the historical and cultural park, and connect tourist attractions such as Juknokwon, Gwanbangjerim, and Metasequoia Road as a tourism hub.” He added, “We expect to contribute to the industrialization and globalization of Korean gardens through attracting the National Korean Garden Culture Center, researching garden resources, developing standard models, and training professionals.”
He continued, “We will complete the Namdo Garden linked with Soswaewon, Juknokwon, and Changpyeong Slow City within this year to promote the spread of garden culture and establish a foundation for tourism revitalization.”
Residents participating in the dialogue both on-site and online raised various suggestions ranging from daily life-related civil complaints to regional issues.
Regarding the designation of a cultural city to transform daily life, which is connected culturally to neighbors, villages, and regions, into a culturally inclusive living culture, Governor Kim said, “Damyang County has been preparing for designation as a cultural city through cultural specialization projects, and the province will also pay attention and do its best to ensure Damyang County is designated as a (preliminary) cultural city so that various cultural projects can be promoted through organic cooperation.”
