Private Meeting at Kim Jong-in's Jongno Office on the 20th
Kim Byung-joon Appointed as Standing Election Committee Chairman, Kim Han-gil as National Unity Committee Chairman
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jun-yi] On the 20th, Yoon Seok-yeol, the presidential candidate of the People Power Party, met with former People Power Party Emergency Committee Chairman Kim Jong-in and reached an agreement to recruit former Liberty Korea Party Emergency Committee Chairman Kim Byung-joon and former New Politics Alliance for Democracy leader Kim Han-gil.
On the same day, Lee Yang-su, the chief spokesperson of the campaign committee, stated in an official statement, "At 1:30 PM today, Candidate Yoon met with former Chairman Kim Jong-in at Kim’s office," adding, "At this meeting, former Chairman Kim Jong-in agreed to appoint former Chairman Kim Byung-joon as the standing campaign committee chairman."
The spokesperson also said, "Furthermore, the two continued detailed discussions regarding the composition and appointments of the campaign committee."
He added, "Since there had been no disagreements from the beginning regarding the provisional position of the National Unity Committee Chairman to be held by former leader Kim, they plan to meet tomorrow (the 21st) at 2 PM at the Dongbu Ichon-dong office to discuss various matters related to the launch of the National Unity Committee."
In a phone interview with this outlet, the spokesperson conveyed about the meeting, "Former Chairman Kim Jong-in accepted the joining of former Chairman Kim Byung-joon and former leader Kim Han-gil, and the two reached a broad agreement."
Previously, Candidate Yoon had been pushing to recruit former Chairman Kim Byung-joon as the standing chairman of the campaign committee and former leader Kim Han-gil as the chairman of the candidate’s direct organization, the National Unity Committee. However, former Chairman Kim Jong-in had maintained a critical stance toward their recruitment. Regarding former Chairman Kim Byung-joon, he said, "There is no need to do things that have never been done before. I have never heard of the position of standing campaign committee chairman." Regarding former leader Kim Han-gil, he criticized, "Does appointing just a few figures as the Integration Committee Chairman (later renamed the Unity Committee) really lead to national unity?"
However, after discussions, it appears that an agreement was reached to include former Chairman Kim Byung-joon and former leader Kim Han-gil. When meeting with reporters on the same day, Candidate Yoon said, "The composition of the campaign committee is going very well without any problems," and added, "Since I have asked for help from former Chairman Kim Byung-joon and former leader Kim Han-gil, I think they will all assist."
