[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Sumi] A racial discrimination controversy has erupted after four Black students assaulted Asian students on a subway in the United States.
According to Fox News and others on the 18th (local time), four African American students were charged with aggravated assault and racially discriminatory threats against three Asian male students and one female student on a subway in Philadelphia the previous day.
Additionally, one of the perpetrators is also facing theft charges for attempting to take the victim's AirPods.
According to videos released on social media, the perpetrators punched one of the three Asian male students sitting on the train and hurled insults at him.
They also pointed fingers and verbally abused an Asian female student who tried to stop the assault. Then, they suddenly struck the female student's head and removed the mask she was wearing.
They pushed the female student toward the train door, grabbed her hair, and assaulted her by punching and stepping on her. One of them even took off his shoe and hit the female student's face with it.
The victims were later transported to a hospital, and fortunately, they did not sustain serious injuries.
The incident came to light when the female victim reported the assault to a patrolling police officer.
SEPTA, the southeastern Pennsylvania transportation authority, Chief Nestel said, "This was not an attack provoked by a confrontation but a racially motivated attack." He added, "The female victim stepped in to stop them and then became the target. She was truly heroic and brave," he said.
