Jeongeup-si Puts Full Effort into Preventing Child Abuse and Creating a Safe Childcare Environment

[Jeongeup=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Jaegil] Jeongeup City in Jeonbuk is putting effort into responding to human rights violations and abuse against children and creating a safe childcare environment.

According to the city on the 19th, the current child population (under 18 years old) in Jeongeup is about 14,300, and reports of child abuse have increased by approximately 70% compared to last year.

On this day, the city held a child abuse prevention campaign to mark Child Abuse Prevention Day and to urge all citizens to pay attention to child abuse prevention and child protection.

Through the campaign, it was conveyed that all children are individuals who deserve respect and that corporal punishment can never be justified under any circumstances. The purpose is to guarantee the welfare of children so that they can grow up healthy, happy, and safe.

The campaign was attended by Mayor Yoo Jin-seop, city hall employees, and about 20 officials from related local institutions such as Jeongeup Police Station and Jeongeup Office of Education.

The campaign, held near Hansol Elementary School during school and work commute hours, used placards and banners to announce the abolition of [Civil Act Article 915 Disciplinary Rights] and urged improvement toward proper parenting methods.

Additionally, promotional materials containing the child abuse reporting phone number, types of child abuse, and reporting guidelines were distributed so that anyone can report when discovering abused children.

The city is focusing its capabilities on creating a stable growth environment and improving the rights of children by establishing a dedicated child abuse response team in line with the publicization of child abuse response.

They installed an emergency child abuse hotline to establish a 24-hour response system and designated Jeongeup Asan Hospital as a dedicated hospital for child abuse to provide prompt and systematic medical care for abused children.

Dedicated child abuse officials and child protection agents have been assigned, and a joint investigation system in cooperation with local police has been established. To prevent child abuse, annual education, campaigns, and a full survey to detect children at risk of abuse early are being conducted.

Mayor Yoo Jin-seop said, “Our attention and care can protect the happy future of children,” and added, “We will continue administrative support and efforts for the safe growth and protection of children.”
