GS Energy Secures Largest Domestic Supply of Eco-Friendly Blue Ammonia
UAE Large-Scale Blue Ammonia Project Joint Venture Partner Selected
Annual 1 Million Tons Project... Securing 200,000 Tons of Production for Domestic Introduction
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] GS Energy has succeeded in participating in a large-scale clean blue ammonia production plant project being developed in the UAE, securing the largest annual supply of 200,000 tons of blue ammonia in South Korea.
GS Energy, the energy-specialized holding company of the GS Group, announced on the 16th that it has secured a 10% stake in Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC)'s blue ammonia development project and has been selected as a joint operator.
This project involves developing a large-scale blue ammonia production plant in Abu Dhabi, UAE, handling all processes from carbon capture to ammonia production. It aims for commercial operation in 2025 with an annual production of 1 million tons. ADNOC holds an 80% stake, while GS Energy and Japan's Mitsui each hold 10%, jointly operating the project.
By participating in this project, GS Energy has secured an annual production volume of 200,000 tons and has been granted disposal rights for the ammonia, which will be imported to South Korea. The imported blue ammonia will be co-fired at GS Group-affiliated power plants or used to obtain hydrogen through ammonia cracking processes for hydrogen vehicle fuel. Assuming all 200,000 tons of ammonia are cracked, 30,000 tons of hydrogen can be obtained. This amount of hydrogen is enough for 75,000 Hyundai Nexo hydrogen passenger cars to simultaneously travel around the Earth once (approximately 40,000 km).
Huh Yong-soo, CEO of GS Energy, said, "Direct participation in the Middle East's eco-friendly blue ammonia development project and the ability to import it domestically will be a meaningful milestone in fulfilling carbon neutrality efforts promoted by the international community and South Korea." He added, "We will continue to strive to contribute to the development of South Korea's energy industry by discovering various global business opportunities."

Meanwhile, GS Energy has established four major ESG management strategies?expanding the green power portfolio, leading the smart power solutions market, building a circular resource ecosystem, and leading the restructuring of clean hydrogen economy infrastructure?to practice ESG, which is core to future corporate value. The participation in this large-scale blue ammonia development project is also part of the ESG management strategy implementation.
