If all 57 works by the two artists are sold, a total of 114 million KRW will be raised. All proceeds will go to Korean high school students.
President Jeon Ho-hwan of Dongmyeong University and Japanese Consul General Maruyama held a joint calligraphy exhibition on the 13th at Dongmyeong Gallery in Dongmyeong University, Busan. The opening ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. on the 15th, and the event will run until the 19th. Although an auction-style exhibition might have been better for fundraising, it was decided not to hold an auction.
All proceeds will be used for scholarships for domestic high school students. Scholarships will be awarded to high school students who read the book “The Chrysanthemum and the Sword,” which analyzes Japanese culture, and submit a book report.
The curriculum of the Doing College, which will be established at this university next year, also includes reading 100 classical books. Doing College is a university that teaches ‘doing (practice).’ High school students who read books and write reviews will benefit from scholarships, and Dongmyeong University will have an opportunity to promote ‘doing’ reading to prospective students.
This calligraphy ‘Korea-Japan Exhibition’ is an event aimed at opening the blocked waterway of relations between the two countries and fostering harmony toward the future.
This joint calligraphy exhibition, co-hosted by Dongmyeong University and the Japanese Consulate General in Busan, can be seen at Dongmyeong Gallery on the 2nd floor of the Architecture and Design Building at Dongmyeong University.
Consul General Maruyama presents 29 works including ▲言響相和 (Eonhyang Sanghwa: words resonate and harmonize with each other) ▲誠信交隣 (Seongsin Gyollin: treating each other sincerely without deceit or conflict) ▲我逢人 (Abongin: I meet people).
In response, President Jeon Ho-hwan presents 28 works including ▲遠行以衆 (Wonhaeng Ijung: if you want to go far, go together) ▲作橋開道 (Jakgyo Gaedo: building bridges opens paths) ▲變則通久 (Byeonjeok Tonggu: change leads to communication and longevity).
There is also the enjoyment of appreciating the difference between the two master calligraphers in the brushwork of ‘一衣帶水’ (Iildae-su: a narrow body of water like a belt of clothing). Both artists have submitted this calligraphy.
The organizers explained that Korea and Japan, as neighbors living closely separated by the sea, submitted works with the intention of communicating and cooperating while looking toward a distant future.
Park Hyung-joon, Mayor of Busan, is scheduled to give a congratulatory speech, stating, “Busan, a cultural city that values the content with assets such as the Busan International Culture Festival and Gamcheon Culture Village, will also promote industry-academia cooperation with the Kyushu region.”
President Jeon Ho-hwan introduced, “I established the 3No (No Grade - No Credit - No Teaching) Doing College to help live a ‘happy life’ regardless of what kind of world comes through practical experience of reading classical writing. Calligraphy and Oriental painting are also elective subjects in Doing College.”
