Son Stabs Father with Weapon After Father Hits Mother During Jesa Preparation... Suspended Sentence Given
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Sumi] A man in his 20s who stabbed his father, who was committing domestic violence, with a weapon was sentenced to probation.
On the 14th, according to the legal community, the Changwon District Court Criminal Division 2 (Chief Judge Lee Jeonghyun) sentenced Mr. A (26), who was tried on charges of attempted parricide, to three years in prison with a four-year probation.
On February 4th, Mr. A's father, while drinking at his home in Gyeongnam, assaulted his wife for the reason of preparing ancestral ritual food. When Mr. A tried to stop him, his father also assaulted Mr. A and threw a soju bottle. In response, Mr. A stabbed his father with a weapon and struck his head and other parts.
As a result of this incident, Mr. A's father was diagnosed with injuries requiring six weeks of treatment.
At the time, Mr. A was suffering from bipolar affective disorder (manic depression) and other mental illnesses and was also under the influence of alcohol.
Investigations revealed that Mr. A's father had previously assaulted his wife. Later, Mr. A harbored negative feelings toward his father and committed the crime when a similar incident occurred again.
The court pointed out, "The danger of Mr. A's actions is significant, and the blameworthiness is also high as he attempted to kill his father."

However, the court ruled, "Considering that Mr. A was suffering from mental illness and was intoxicated, and that the victim, the father, also bears some responsibility for the occurrence of the crime, the sentence was determined comprehensively."
