[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Cho Hyung-joo] Im Taek, Mayor of Dong-gu, Gwangju, was honored with the '1st Class Award' for a basic local government head at the '2021 Democratic Party of Korea Local Government Excellent Policy and Local Council Excellent Ordinance Competition' for his contribution to 'Creating a Humanities City in Dong-gu that Increases Residents' Happiness Index.'
According to Dong-gu Office on the 9th, this competition was held by the Democratic Party of Korea's Good Local Government Committee to discover and spread innovative and verified excellent policies and ordinances that help residents' lives, targeting local governments and local councils.
The humanities city creation, a key policy of Dong-gu during the 7th local government term, was highly evaluated for planning and operating projects that avoid unilateral government-led initiatives and promote residents' voluntary participation and activities.
Mayor Im has been promoting differentiated strategies unique to Dong-gu by focusing on book-related content programs so that residents can feel 'humanities in daily life' over the past three years, operating projects such as 'Reading Dong-gu' and 'Humanities University Operation.'
Also, the 'Humanities Club Support Project,' a key project of Dong-gu that has been promoted for two years to enhance residents' humanities capabilities and spread local humanities spirit, has received high responses, with 16 clubs applying last year and 20 clubs applying this year.
This year, the 'Reading Dong-gu' project was expanded compared to last year by selecting 100 recommended books and providing about 4,000 local residents with one book of their choice at nine contracted bookstores in the district. Additionally, four themed 'Dong-gu Humanities Walking Paths' were created by discovering humanities resources such as historical humanities and places and weaving them into stories.
Furthermore, achievements have been made in various fields including ▲Humanities Prototype Discovery Project (publication of Dong-gu Figures 1 & 2, Old Shops on Chungjang-ro, Walking Through the Time of Hak-dong) ▲Life Publishing Project ▲Happy Book Village Creation Project.
Im Taek, Mayor of Dong-gu, said, "Despite the difficult situation due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, we were able to achieve good results thanks to the residents and public officials who joined forces for 'creating a humanities city.' We will continue to do our best to find solutions to problems such as population, unemployment, alienation, and discrimination through the spirit of humanities and to raise the spiritual value of the city to realize a happy community."
