Prosecution Appeals Second Trial Verdict Reducing Yuje-su's Sentence
[Asia Economy Reporter Bae Kyunghwan] Former Busan Deputy Mayor for Economic Affairs Yoo Jae-soo, who was indicted on charges of receiving bribes worth tens of millions of won from financial industry insiders, is set to face the Supreme Court's judgment. Yoo was sentenced to one year in prison with a two-year probation and fined 50 million won in the appellate court.
According to the legal community on the 9th, the prosecution filed an appeal with the Seoul High Court the day before, dissatisfied with the appellate court's ruling on Yoo.
Yoo is accused of receiving bribes totaling about 50 million won from investment firms and representatives of credit information and debt collection companies between 2010 and 2018 (charges include bribery, corruption after bribery, and violation of the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act).
The first trial court judged that the 42.21 million won Yoo received constituted a bribe and sentenced him to one year and six months in prison with a three-year probation and a fine of 90 million won. The court also ordered the confiscation of the amount recognized as bribery from Yoo.
However, the appellate court acquitted Yoo of forcibly selling his own book, unlike the first trial, and sentenced him to one year in prison with a two-year probation and a fine of 50 million won. It also ordered the confiscation of about 21 million won.

Meanwhile, allegations of Yoo's corruption began at the end of 2018 with revelations by former prosecutor investigator Kim Tae-woo, who worked in the Special Inspection Division of the Blue House's Office of Civil Affairs. Kim also raised suspicions that when former Minister of Justice Cho Kuk served as Senior Secretary for Civil Affairs, the Blue House knew about Yoo's misconduct reports but covered up the investigation. Cho, former Blue House Senior Secretary for Civil Affairs Baek Won-woo, and former Anti-Corruption Secretary Park Hyung-chul are currently undergoing first trial proceedings on charges of covering up Yoo's misconduct despite knowing about it.
