A Man in His 50s Who Threatened Father-in-Law with a Weapon Receives Suspended Sentence in First Trial
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] A Chinese national man who was prosecuted for yelling at his father-in-law and threatening him with a weapon, claiming his wife was not home and not answering calls, was sentenced to a suspended prison term.
According to the court on the 6th, Judge Park Sung-gyu of the Seoul Southern District Court Criminal Division 4 sentenced A (52) to one year in prison with a two-year suspension for the charge of special threat to a direct ascendant.
On April 4th at around 12:34 a.m., A was charged with going to his father-in-law B’s place, shouting, "Where is my daughter? If she doesn’t come, I will kill everyone," and threatening him with a weapon.
He was enraged because his wife was neither at home nor answering her phone, so he went to see his father-in-law. It is known that B locked the front door while A briefly stepped outside, so no harm occurred. About two weeks after the incident, A was found to have divorced his wife.

Judge Park stated, "A carried a weapon and threatened the victim, who was the direct ascendant of his spouse, and considering the circumstances, method, and content of the crime, the nature of the offense is not good." However, he added, "A is a first-time offender and is reflecting on his wrongdoing," and "Since a divorce mediation was established after this incident and considering these factors, the victim does not wish to press charges."
