The Sancheong-Hamyang Incident Civilian Victims' Families Association and Sancheong County held the "70th Anniversary of the Sancheong-Hamyang Incident Civilian Victims and the 34th Joint Memorial Service and Commemoration Ceremony" on the 5th at the Sancheong-Hamyang Incident Memorial Park in Geumseo-myeon.
The event was attended by Lee Jae-geun, Mayor of Sancheong County; Kang Seung-je, Deputy Governor of Hamyang; Shim Jae-hwa, Chairman of the Sancheong County Council; Yuk Seong-cheol, Administrative Officer of the Blue House Social Integration Secretariat; Yoon Byung-il, Head of the Past Affairs Support Group at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety; Park Jong-hoon, Superintendent of Gyeongnam Provincial Office of Education; as well as heads of various organizations and victim families.
To prevent the spread of COVID-19, President Moon Jae-in, who could not attend the event, sent a floral tribute, and Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum and Minister Jeon Hae-cheol of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety conveyed messages of consolation to the families through a memorial video.
Prime Minister Kim said, "As the Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea, I apologize to the spirits who were unjustly sacrificed by our national army's gunfire," adding, "The Sancheong-Hamyang Incident is a tragedy in modern Korean history that we must never forget and a pain of our community. The government will take full responsibility until the victims' honor is restored and their wounds are healed."

Jeong Jae-won, chairman of the victims' families association, said, "Although it has been 70 years since the Sancheong-Hamyang Incident, the compensation law, which is the wish of the families, has still not been passed," and added, "I hope that the 'Special Act on Compensation for the Geochang Incident and Sancheong-Hamyang Incident,' recently proposed by Representative Kim Byung-wook, will be processed so that we can have a country and a National Assembly that are not ashamed."
