Taiwan Foreign Minister: "US Providing Taiwan with Information to Identify China Threats"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Suhwan] Amid increasing all-out pressure from China targeting Taiwan, a senior Taiwanese official stated that the United States is providing Taiwan with information that allows it to accurately understand China's threats.
Following the disclosure of the presence of U.S. troops stationed in Taiwan, this supports the close ties between the two countries, leading to expectations that U.S.-China tensions will further intensify.
According to Taiwanese media such as Liberty Times and United Daily News on the 5th, Wu Chao-hsieh, Taiwan's Minister of Foreign Affairs, recently said in an interview with the Polish daily Rzeczpospolita, "The United States provides Taiwan with relevant information necessary to accurately identify China's threats," adding, "The intelligence provided by the U.S. military helps Taiwan's defense."
Minister Wu also stated, "Taiwan must be able to defend itself," and mentioned, "For this, support in defensive materials from the United States is necessary."
When asked whether Taiwan can defend itself until the moment before the U.S. comes to support in case of an emergency, Wu said, "Taiwan is currently striving to enhance asymmetric warfare capabilities and will fight and win until the last moment."
He also emphasized, "We cannot rely on other countries to come and help us," and "We should not ask other countries to sacrifice their children to fight for Taiwan."
Minister Wu expressed concern that Chinese President Xi Jinping's actions are following his previous statements regarding the use of force for unification with Taiwan. He pointed out the increasing incursions of Chinese fighter jets and bombers into Taiwan's Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) as an example.
Wu further stressed, "The focus is not whether China will attack Taiwan in 4, 6, or 10 years, but on preparing well to fight against China," explaining, "Because weakness invites Chinese aggression."
He also noted the European Union's (EU) special mention of Taiwan in its Indo-Pacific strategy. Wu explained that the deployment of the British aircraft carrier and warships from France, Germany, and the Netherlands in the Indo-Pacific region shows these countries' attention to the area and their connection to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
Meanwhile, Chen Ming-tong, Director-General of Taiwan's National Security Bureau (NSB), stated in a report to the Legislative Yuan's Foreign and National Defense Committee the previous day that there is currently no possibility of a Chinese military attack on the Pratas Islands (Dongsha Islands), which Taiwan effectively controls.
He added, "In fact, there is debate within China itself," and said, "There is no possibility of an invasion of the Pratas Islands during President Tsai Ing-wen's term."
