Assemblyman An Ho-young Holds Meeting with Former Minister Kang Kyung-hwa Ahead of ILO Secretary-General Candidacy
Request to Reflect ILO Conventions in Job and Labor Market Realities
[Wanju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Han-ho] Ahn Ho-young, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea (Wanju, Jinan, Muju, Jangsu), held a meeting with former Minister Kang Kyung-hwa, who declared her candidacy for ILO Secretary-General, and requested efforts to reflect the realities of domestic jobs and the labor market in ILO conventions, the lawmaker announced on the 4th.
Rep. Ahn said, "The National Assembly ratified three core ILO conventions, and as the domestic labor market and labor-management relations advanced to the next level, South Korea has shed the stigma of being a labor backward country and raised its national stature. If former Minister Kang Kyung-hwa is elected as the ILO Secretary-General, she is expected to be a leader who will create the ILO's 'New Century, New Leap,'" he said.
In particular, he proposed that upon former Minister Kang's election, she actively work to reflect the realities of jobs and the labor market, which are changing into atypical forms such as special employment types, platform workers, and ultra-short-time workers, in ILO conventions while strengthening the tripartite labor-management-government framework, the basic structure of the ILO.
.
The ILO is an international organization under the United Nations (UN) established in 1919 to improve workers' working conditions and status, with 187 member countries.
The election of the ILO Secretary-General proceeds in the order of candidate registration, election campaigns and official hearings, and voting. The board vote, which includes 28 government representatives and 14 each of worker and employer representatives, totaling 56 members, decides by majority vote. The final election will be held in March 2022, and the term will begin on October 1.
If former Minister Kang Kyung-hwa is elected, she will become the first Asian and the first female Secretary-General in the 103-year history of the International Labour Organization (ILO).
Former Minister Kang is evaluated to have the necessary leadership through her UN career and personal network, as well as her experience as Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Moon Jae-in administration, which launched with the banner of labor respect, and her international reputation.
