Democrats Narrowly Win New Jersey Governor Race After Losing 'Teotbat' in Virginia
Republican Party's Unexpected Strong Performance... Trump Influence Reconfirmed
Democratic Party Faces 'Dark Clouds' Ahead of Next Year's Midterm Elections
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Suhwan] The U.S. Democratic Party narrowly secured a victory in the New Jersey gubernatorial election held on the 2nd (local time).
On the 3rd, the Associated Press reported that incumbent Democratic Governor Phil Murphy narrowly defeated Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli.
This marks the first time in 44 years, since 1977, that a Democratic governor has succeeded in being re-elected in New Jersey.
New Jersey has long been considered a stronghold with a strong Democratic support base, and pre-election polls generally showed Murphy with about a 10% lead, predicting an easy win.
However, once the vote counting began, Ciattarelli took the lead while Murphy chased closely behind, resulting in a tense, back-and-forth battle throughout.
CNN reported that with about 82% of the votes counted, the margin between the two candidates narrowed to as few as 61 votes. Due to the extremely close race, AP's announcement of Murphy's victory came late in the afternoon the day after the election.
Especially since the Democrats had suffered a defeat to the Republicans in the Virginia gubernatorial election, which was seen as a key battleground, losing New Jersey as well would have resulted in a disastrous outcome for the party.
In Virginia, the Republicans won not only the governor's race but also the lieutenant governor and attorney general elections.
Additionally, in the 100-seat Virginia House of Delegates election, Republicans currently hold 50 seats, Democrats 46, and 4 seats remain undecided. From the Democrats' perspective, if they perform well until the end, they could secure an equal number of seats or otherwise have to concede majority status to the Republicans.
This election was seen as a midterm evaluation of President Joe Biden, who had just passed nine months in office.
Accordingly, if the Democrats lost both gubernatorial races, concerns grew that Biden's declining approval ratings amid recent setbacks could weaken his control over national governance.
Although the Republicans lost the New Jersey governor's race, their unexpected close contest and victory in Virginia were seen as better-than-expected performances.
There is also analysis that this signals a green light toward achieving their goal of regaining congressional power in next year's November midterm elections, now just one year away.
On the other hand, the Democrats realized that public sentiment is increasingly drifting away from President Biden. Considering that midterm elections historically tend to disadvantage the ruling party, concerns about next year's midterms have intensified.
Notably, the Democrats made an anti-Trump slogan a key strategy in this election, but it ultimately did not resonate effectively.
Former President Donald Trump, who continues to enjoy overwhelming support among Republican-leaning voters, reaffirmed his enduring influence.
