Hyundai Motor Group Invests 30 Billion Won to Establish Joint Battery Research Center with Seoul National University

View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Hyundai Motor Group announced on the 3rd that it will establish a joint battery research center with the top battery expert group in Korea at Seoul National University to secure future electric vehicle technology leadership.
Hyundai Motor Group and Seoul National University signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the establishment of the 'Hyundai Motor Group-Seoul National University Battery Joint Research Center' and mid- to long-term joint research at the administration building of Seoul National University Gwanak Campus in Gwanak-gu, Seoul, on the same day.
The agreement was attended by Seoul National University President Sejeong Oh, Research Director Hyunsook Lee, Dean of Engineering Byungho Lee, Professor Jangwook Choi of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, and Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Euisun Chung, President Albert Biermann, President Jungguk Park, President Geol Kim, and President Jaewon Shin, among other officials from both sides.
President Sejeong Oh said, "I am pleased that Seoul National University and Hyundai Motor Group have signed a historic agreement for the future of Korea's secondary battery technology," adding, "The excellent talent, education, and research infrastructure of Seoul National University combined with Hyundai Motor Group's spirit of challenge and outstanding platform will maximize synergy in battery research and provide a great opportunity for both institutions to grow together."
Chairman Euisun Chung emphasized, "Technological advancement in batteries will accelerate the wave of electrification, and that wave will become an unstoppable major trend," adding, "The Hyundai Motor Group-Seoul National University Battery Joint Research Center will serve as a foundation for Hyundai Motor Group to solidify its leadership in future mobility business and for Seoul National University to become the source of building a battery research ecosystem."
He continued, "It will become an important foundation that produces highly refined technology and world-class talent to lead Korea's future and make innovative contributions to the global mobility industry."
The Hyundai Motor Group-Seoul National University Battery Joint Research Center will jointly promote mid- to long-term advanced research to develop next-generation battery technology centered on three visions: ▲ battery research that anyone can use without inconvenience ▲ battery research that anyone can use with confidence ▲ battery research that contributes to global carbon neutrality with Korea's excellent researchers.
Hyundai Motor Group plans to research next-generation battery advanced technologies that can dramatically increase electric vehicle driving range and reduce charging time in collaboration with domestic academia possessing world-class research capabilities. It also plans to focus on advanced technology research that can closely monitor battery status.
Specifically, the Hyundai Motor Group-Seoul National University Battery Joint Research Center will focus on four areas: ▲ Battery Management System (BMS) ▲ Solid-State Battery (SSB) ▲ Lithium Metal Battery (LMB) ▲ Battery Process Technology for joint research.
Hyundai Motor Group will invest more than 30 billion KRW over the next 10 years to support joint research. In particular, by the end of 2022, it plans to establish a dedicated research space for the Hyundai Motor Group-Seoul National University Battery Joint Research Center at Seoul National University and install top-tier experimental equipment.

Professor Jangwook Choi of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Seoul National University was appointed as the director of the Hyundai Motor Group-Seoul National University Battery Joint Research Center. The research will involve a faculty team of 15 professors from domestic universities including KAIST, UNIST, DGIST, and Sungkyunkwan University centered on Seoul National University, along with more than 100 outstanding master's and doctoral-level talents.
