Hyundai Motor and Kia Surpass Industry Average in US Sales Last Month... Eco-Friendly Vehicle Sales Up 222% (Comprehensive)
Compared to a 22% Average Performance Drop by Other Companies Including Toyota, Holding Up Well
Genesis Sales Also Increased by 402.8%
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Despite the prolonged global semiconductor supply shortage, Hyundai Motor Company and Kia achieved performance exceeding the industry average in the U.S. market last month.
On the 3rd, Hyundai Motor Group announced that it sold 114,128 units in the U.S. market last month, a 0.4% decrease compared to the same period last year. Hyundai Motor sold 62,061 units, a 6.2% increase from October last year, while Kia sold 52,067 units, a 7.2% decrease.
Hyundai Motor sold 56,761 units last month, a 1% decrease compared to the same period last year, but its performance improved thanks to the luxury brand Genesis, which recorded a historic high sales volume of 5,300 units last month (a 402.8% increase compared to the same period last year).
Hyundai Motor Group explained that although sales volume slightly decreased, considering that the average sales performance of other automakers whose results have been disclosed so far?such as Toyota (-28.6%), Honda (-23.5%), Subaru (-40.0%), and Mazda (-14.1%)?declined by 22.0% compared to last year, their performance was commendable.
The best-selling models at Hyundai Motor last month were ▲Tucson (9,735 units) ▲Palisade (8,670 units) ▲Avante (8,446 units). At Kia, ▲Telluride (7,695 units) ▲Forte (K3, 7,523 units) ▲K5 (7,427 units) led U.S. sales. The Genesis brand showed steady sales with the GV70 (1,869 units) and GV80 (1,505 units).
Randy Parker, Senior Vice President of Sales at Hyundai Motor America (HMA), said, "With high demand for our product portfolio, overall we continue to secure a significant market share."
In particular, sales of eco-friendly vehicles increased noticeably. Hyundai Motor and Kia sold 11,466 eco-friendly vehicles?including hybrids (HEV), electric vehicles, and hydrogen vehicles?marking a 221.8% increase compared to the same period last year. Hyundai Motor sold 7,330 units, up 262.7%, and Kia sold 4,136 units, up 168.2%. By vehicle type, HEVs increased by 226.5% (9,290 units), electric vehicles by 210.3% (2,113 units), and hydrogen vehicles by 70.3% (63 units).
The cumulative sales volume of Hyundai Motor and Kia from January to October reached 1,289,608 units, a 29.3% increase compared to the same period last year. Hyundai Motor sold 682,016 units, up 32.9%, and Kia sold 607,592 units, up 25.4%, already surpassing last year's total sales volume.
