Musk: "I Will Donate 7 Trillion Won If You Explain the Solution to Hunger"
[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, proposed that he would sell his shares immediately if the United Nations could prove that the global hunger problem can be solved with $6 billion (approximately 7.1 trillion KRW). Following this statement, Tesla's stock price surged by over 8% on the 1st (local time).
According to CNN and others, Musk tweeted the day before, "If the World Food Programme (WFP) can explain in this Twitter thread exactly how to solve world hunger with $6 billion, I will sell Tesla stock immediately to do it (solve hunger)." However, he added, "The public must be able to see exactly how the money is used through open-source accounting."
This statement came in response to the UN WFP Executive Director's request for donations from Musk, the world's first or second richest person, and Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon. David Beasley, WFP Executive Director, pointed to these billionaires on the 26th of last month, stating that $6 billion is needed to save 42 million lives.
When Musk's tweet was posted, Beasley commented that WFP's accounting system is already open to the public, guaranteeing transparency. Beasley said, "I am willing to meet Musk anywhere on that day to explain WFP's plan in person."
According to Bloomberg's billionaire index, as of that day, Musk's assets amount to $311 billion, the largest in the world, and $6 billion corresponds to about 2% of his wealth.
