Gwangju City Launches Survey on 'Braille Signage for Disabled' in Public Institutions
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Gwangju Metropolitan City is launching a survey on the status of convenience facilities for the disabled.
On the 31st, Gwangju City announced that it will conduct a braille signage status survey on convenience facilities for the disabled at 134 public institutions and related organizations, including administrative welfare centers frequently used by the disabled, throughout November to improve convenience for the disabled.
Technical staff from the Disabled Convenience Promotion Technology Support Center plan to visit public facilities in the area to focus on inspecting 11 items, including braille signs on entrance doors and braille markings on handrails of stairs and ramps.
According to a full survey conducted in 2018, while the installation rate of convenience facilities for the disabled was 82.2%, the installation rate for braille-related items was insufficient at around 40%, prompting this status survey.
Based on the results of this survey, the city plans to request action plans and improvements from the relevant institutions where braille signage is insufficient.
Choi Sunyoung, head of the Disabled Welfare Division of the city, said, “Public institutions such as administrative welfare centers, which form the foundation of administration, should set an example in installing convenience facilities for the disabled,” and added, “We will make further efforts through this braille signage status survey to ensure that the disabled can use public institutions safely and conveniently.”
