Private University Corporations' Revenue-Generating Assets Increased by 1 Trillion Won Compared to Last Year

Full-Time Faculty Lecture Responsibility Rate at 66.3%, Decreasing for 3 Consecutive Years
The revenue-generating basic assets of private university corporations increased by about 1 trillion won compared to last year.
According to the 'October University Information Disclosure' results announced on the 29th by the Ministry of Education and the University Education Council, the revenue-generating basic assets of private universities amounted to 10.3 trillion won this year, an increase of 900 billion won from the previous year. Revenue-generating basic assets refer to assets necessary for university management that are intended to generate income, including land or buildings owned by the corporation, stocks, deposits/trusts, government bonds, and so on.
The acquisition rate of revenue-generating basic assets for 195 general universities and teacher training colleges was 81.8%, up 10.4 percentage points from the previous year. The acquisition rate is calculated by dividing the total evaluated value of revenue-generating basic assets held by the school corporation by the standard amount stipulated in the university establishment and operation criteria, then multiplying by 100. The acquisition rate of universities in the metropolitan area (90.7%) increased by 11.4 percentage points compared to the previous year, while non-metropolitan universities (69.0%) rose by 8.9 percentage points.
The revenue-generating basic assets of 133 junior colleges amounted to 2.3 trillion won, an increase of 300 billion won from the previous year. The acquisition rate was 100.9%, up 18.5 percentage points from the previous year.
The legal burden amount for statutory contributions such as private school pensions, national pensions, health insurance, industrial accident and employment insurance for general universities and teacher training colleges was 351.8 billion won, with a burden rate of 53.9%. This increased by 27.9 billion won from the previous year (23.9 billion won), and the burden rate rose by 1.1 percentage points. The burden rate for universities in the metropolitan area (56.9%) increased by 1.0 percentage point, and for non-metropolitan universities (49.7%) by 1.2 percentage points.
The lecture responsibility rate of full-time faculty members at general universities and teacher training colleges was 66.3%, a decrease of 0.4 percentage points compared to the second semester of last year. The full-time faculty responsibility rate was 67.8% in 2019 but has been on a declining trend each year. The proportion of lectures handled by adjunct instructors slightly increased to 21.4%. The lecture responsibility rate of full-time faculty at private universities was 67.4%, higher than that of national and public universities (67.4%), and the rate was higher in non-metropolitan areas (69.6%) than in metropolitan areas (61.3%).
The proportion of small-sized courses with 20 or fewer students among general university and teacher training college courses offered in the second semester of 2021 was 42.4%, up 2.0 percentage points from 40.4% in the second semester of 2020. The small-sized course ratio at private universities was 43.3%, higher than that of national and public universities (39.2%), and non-metropolitan universities (42.9%) had a higher ratio than metropolitan universities (41.5%).
The dormitory occupancy rate for general universities and teacher training colleges this year was 22.4%, the same as last year. The dormitory occupancy rate refers to the ratio of dormitory capacity to the number of enrolled students. Private universities (20.9%) had a higher rate than national and public universities (27.0%), and non-metropolitan areas (25.8%) had a higher rate than metropolitan areas (18.0%).

Among 195 universities, 186 (95.4%) conducted education on the prevention of sexual violence and domestic violence. Universities whose heads completed all four types of education numbered 190 (97.4%). The education completion rate among university staff was 73.9%, an increase of 8.5 percentage points from 65.4% the previous year, but the rate among university (graduate) students was 42.6%, a decrease of 0.4 percentage points from 43.0% the previous year.
