The Mokpo National University ‘Visiting and Invited Laboratory’ is a project aimed at giving back to local communities by visiting or inviting middle and high schools in island and rural areas to explore careers and majors. This year, the 20th laboratory session was held at Gangjin High School.
Gangjin High School has been operating as a base high school since 2016, running educational courses and student clubs outside the regular curriculum to develop special talents or career paths. Students from the school’s science club also participated in this visiting laboratory program.
This program was conducted in connection with the secondary education curriculum under the themes of ‘Physics Experiment Using Smartphones’ (Physics), ‘Synthesis of Gold Nanoparticles’ (Chemistry), and ‘DNA Polymerase Chain Reaction’ (Biology). These experiments are introduced in textbooks but are difficult to perform within the secondary education curriculum.
A student who participated in the physics experiment said, “It was very interesting to use a smartphone, which is used in daily life, to calculate and find the vibration frequency using various sensors built into the smartphone.”
Additionally, a student who took part in the biology experiment shared, “In a situation where the whole world is threatened by the coronavirus, it was very interesting and enjoyable to learn that the PCR technique is used for coronavirus testing.”
