Completion of Shin-Incheon Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power Plant... World's Largest 79MW Scale
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Haeyoung] The world's largest hydrogen fuel cell power plant is being constructed in Korea and is entering full-scale operation.
On the 26th, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the 'Shin Incheon Bitdream Fuel Cell Power Plant Comprehensive Completion Ceremony' was held at the Shin Incheon Bitdream headquarters of Korea Southern Power in Seo-gu, Incheon.
The Shin Incheon Bitdream hydrogen fuel cell power plant is a power plant with a total capacity of 78.96 MW, built by Korea Southern Power in four phases since 2017, using fuel cell generators supplied by POSCO Energy and Doosan Fuel Cell. This is the world's largest hydrogen fuel cell power plant currently in operation. It will supply electricity sufficient for 250,000 households annually. The total project cost was 340 billion KRW.
Unlike conventional power generators, hydrogen fuel cells do not produce electricity through high-temperature combustion, resulting in very low emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOX) and sulfur oxides (SOX). They also function as a 'large-scale air purifier' by absorbing fine dust from the air and filtering it. The newly completed fuel cell power plant absorbs about 2.4 tons of fine dust annually and purifies air sufficient for approximately 700,000 people to breathe.
It is expected to contribute to providing cleaner air to local residents by massively purifying fine dust emitted from the liquefied natural gas (LNG) thermal power plant located within the same Shin Incheon Bitdream headquarters. Additionally, as a byproduct of electricity production, the power plant produces hot water for heating that can be used simultaneously by about 44,000 households, and plans to supply affordable heat stably through nearby heating service providers.

Kang Kyungseong, Director of the Energy Industry Office at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, said in his congratulatory speech at the completion ceremony, "Recently, Seo-gu, Incheon has been leading Korea's future hydrogen economy by attracting Hyundai Mobis's next-generation hydrogen fuel cell factory and SK IGE's liquefied hydrogen plant." He added, "The Shin Incheon Bitdream fuel cell power plant will contribute to expanding the power supply capacity of the Incheon Seo-gu regional power system and will stably supply electricity to advanced hydrogen economy production facilities in the region."
