[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Seohyun] A man in his 60s who killed his brother-in-law and injured his biological sister by wielding a weapon during a Chuseok holiday drinking session has had his prison sentence finalized after withdrawing his appeal.
On the 26th, the 1st Criminal Division of the Daejeon High Court (Presiding Judge Baek Seungyeop) announced that it sentenced Mr. A (69), who was tried last month on charges of murder and attempted murder, to 18 years in prison, the same as the first trial.
Subsequently, Mr. A filed an appeal against the appellate court's ruling at the Daejeon High Court but withdrew the appeal on the 6th, finalizing the sentence.
Mr. A is accused of stabbing his brother-in-law Mr. C (62) to death with a weapon while drinking with his biological sister Ms. B (71) and her husband, who had come to visit him at his apartment in Inju-myeon, Asan-si, Chungnam, on September 30, the first day of last year's Chuseok holiday.
At the time, Mr. A was living in an 18-pyeong apartment he purchased with inheritance left by his late mother and his own money. It was reported that he harbored resentment because his relatively wealthier sister and her husband did not provide financial support.
When Mr. C said, "Sell the apartment and give me some pocket money and share with your sister," Mr. A became enraged, saying, "I can't stand to see you living well," and committed the crime. Losing his composure, Mr. A wildly wielded the weapon in the kitchen, and Mr. C died on the spot. Ms. B was attacked by her brother while trying to stop the crime but managed to escape outside the house and survived.

The first trial court sentenced Mr. A to 18 years in prison. Both Mr. A and the prosecution appealed on the grounds of inappropriate sentencing, but the second trial court dismissed both appeals, stating, "Although the victim's side has reached a settlement, the crime's outcome is very serious, and the original sentence cannot be considered too light or too heavy."
