The donation ceremony took place at the Dongdaemun branch office of the Labor Union on the 6th floor of the Dongdaemun-gu Office, with participation from Jeong In-hong, President of the Dongdaemun-gu Fashion Sewing Federation, and Jeong Seok-ju, head of the Dongdaemun branch of the Seoul Metropolitan Government Labor Union, among others.
This donation was promoted to express gratitude for the support provided by the Dongdaemun-gu Cleaning Administration Department in handling waste fabric generated from garment sewing factories within Dongdaemun-gu.
Since 2019, the district has supported waste fabric disposal to revitalize the local garment sewing industry, handling 191 tons (4 months) in 2019, 658 tons (12 months) in 2020, and 1,429 tons (9 months) in 2021. This shows an increasing trend in disposal volume due to the growing number of beneficiaries.
The waste fabric disposal support is carried out by the Dongdaemun-gu Fashion Sewing Committee, which collects waste fabric at an intermediate waste storage site, and the Dongdaemun-gu Office Cleaning Administration Department transports and processes it to disposal companies. This method reduced the cost from 7,000?8,000 KRW per sack to 4,500 KRW per sack, significantly lowering the burden on sewing companies.
Jeong In-hong, President of the Dongdaemun-gu Fashion Sewing Federation, said, “The garment sewing industry, which is struggling due to COVID-19, has received great help from the district’s waste fabric disposal support. Although it is a small gesture, we gathered the members’ hearts to donate masks in hopes of providing some strength during these tiring and difficult times.”
Yoo Deok-yeol, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, expressed gratitude, saying, “I thank the Dongdaemun-gu Fashion Sewing Federation for donating masks on behalf of the local representative manufacturing industry, garment manufacturing, during this challenging time of COVID-19. We will continue to strive to be a solid pillar for regional economic revitalization through various support policies for small business owners, including garment manufacturing.”

In March last year, when COVID-19 was spreading, the district produced and purchased public relief masks in cooperation with the Dongdaemun-gu Fashion Sewing Federation through the ‘Northeast Region Fashion Sewing Industry Development Council,’ distributing 90,000 sets to local schools (students), national basic livelihood security recipients, and lower-income groups. To support the local garment sewing industry, the district also allocated a second supplementary budget in 2021 to promote work environment improvement projects for medical manufacturing companies.
