Jeonju City's Citizen Participation Energy Policy 'Eutteum'

[Jeonju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Han-ho] Jeonju City's citizen-participatory energy policy has been recognized as a nationwide model case.

Jeonju City announced on the 13th that it received the Regional Energy Transition National Network Award at the 3rd Korea Solar League (K-Solar League) held during the '2021 Korea Energy Show' at KINTEX in Ilsan.

This is the second time Jeonju City has received this award, following 2019.

The 3rd Korea Solar League was jointly hosted by the Climate Crisis Response and Energy Transition Local Government Council, Korea Energy Agency, the National Association of Mayors and Governors, and the National Council for Sustainable Development. It is a "solar energy generation competition league" where local governments and civil society compete on achievements and policies in renewable energy dissemination.

In this competition, various solar power generation and dissemination cases were discovered from 17 metropolitan local governments, 226 basic local governments, as well as cooperatives and private organizations.

Among them, Jeonju City received high evaluations for energy transition cases involving citizen participation, such as the establishment and operation of the Jeonju Citizen Solar Power Plant, earning the Regional Energy Transition National Network Award.

During the presentation of excellent cases that day, Jeonju City shared with local governments nationwide the 'Energy Design 3040' policy, which pursues five major strategies and 30 tasks aiming to achieve an energy self-sufficiency rate of 30% and an electricity self-sufficiency rate of 40% by 2025. The five strategies include △Saving and Efficiency △Decentralization and Production △Participation and Sharing △Education and Culture △Coexistence and Integration. They also shared dissemination cases of solar power facilities of the Jeonju Citizen Solar Power Cooperative, such as Hyoja Reservoir, Songcheon-dong Eoullim Sports Center, and Cheonma Reservoir.

Additionally, Jeonju emphasized the importance of citizen participation by introducing cases such as citizen roundtable meetings and energy transition citizen forums for climate crisis response, as well as campaigns for realizing '2050 Carbon Neutrality' involving financial institutions, medical sectors, cafes, and communities.
