At Hamyang Sansam Expo, Gyeongnam Intangible Cultural Heritage Festival Unfolds at Sangnim Park Featuring Miryang Baekjungnori and Tongyeong Ogwangdae
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Intangible cultural heritage representatives of Gyeongnam gathered at the 2021 Hamyang Sansam Anti-Aging Expo venue to hold a grand festival.
The ‘2021 Gyeongsangnam-do Intangible Cultural Heritage Festival,’ hosted by Gyeongsangnam-do and Hamyang-gun and organized by the Hamyang Cultural Center, was held over two days on the 7th and 8th at Sangnim Park in Hamyang-gun.
The Gyeongnam Intangible Cultural Heritage Festival featured a total of 11 groups, including 6 performing arts, 3 traditional crafts, and 2 ritual ceremonies, aiming to foster pride in intangible cultural heritage, provide an opportunity to preserve and pass down Gyeongnam’s excellent intangible cultural heritage, and introduce Gyeongnam’s outstanding intangible cultural heritage.
On the 7th, performances began with Miryang Baekjungnori (Important Intangible Cultural Property No. 68), followed by Jinju Pogurakmu (Gyeongnam Intangible Cultural Property No. 12), Aratdeuk Surukje (Important Intangible Cultural Property No. 127), and Masan Nongcheongnori (Gyeongnam Intangible Cultural Property No. 6).
At the opening ceremony held at 4 p.m. that day, Cultural Center Director Jeong Sang-gi said, “I am pleased that the Gyeongsangnam-do Intangible Cultural Heritage Festival, held together with visitors from across the country at Hamyang, where the Expo is in full swing, is being successfully held,” and added, “I thank all the Gyeongnam intangible cultural heritage performance teams, participants, and audience members who joined the festival.”
County Governor Seo Chun-su also said, “It seems that the event, where the Hamyang Sansam Anti-Aging Expo and Gyeongnam’s intangible cultural heritage were presented together, brought new enjoyment to visitors nationwide,” and added, “Through this event, I hope it laid the foundation for the transmission and preservation of culture containing the lives and sorrows of our ancestors and became a festival venue where all visitors could enjoy Gyeongnam’s intangible cultural heritage.”
On the 8th, a colorful cultural feast unfolded, starting with the lively rhythms of Goseong Ogwangdae (Important Intangible Cultural Property No. 7), followed by Jinju Samcheonpo 12th Nongak (Important Intangible Cultural Property No. 11-1), Tongyeong Seungjeonmu (Important Intangible Cultural Property No. 21), and Goseong Nongyo (Important Intangible Cultural Property No. 84-1).
During the event, invited performances included Hamyang Deul Sori, a collection of work songs passed down in the Hamyang area, and Songjeon Dadumyi performances by elders from Songjeon Village in Hucheon-myeon, fostering pride in Hamyang’s traditional heritage.
Additionally, traditional experience events were prepared, including Ma Cheonhan’s paper craft, recognized as a holder of Gyeongnam-do intangible cultural heritage Hanji-making in March, as well as Hamyang Solsongju (Gyeongnam-do Intangible Cultural Property No. 35) and Hamyang Bangjja Yugi (Gyeongnam-do Intangible Cultural Property No. 44).

Visitors participating in the festival said, “I am very happy to be able to see intangible cultural heritage performances that I have never seen before at the Hamyang Expo venue,” and added, “It was a great opportunity to understand and take pride in the intangible cultural heritage passed down from our ancestors.”
