President Moon: "Coexistence with Nature, Top Priority is Overcoming the Climate Crisis"
4th Asia-Pacific Environment Ministers Forum Video Congratulatory Address... "Korea Actively Contributes to 'Carbon Neutrality'"
[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Jeong-min] President Moon Jae-in stated in a video congratulatory message at the 4th Asia-Pacific Environment Ministers Forum on the 7th that "the top priority task for coexistence with nature is overcoming the climate crisis."
President Moon said, "The Earth is warming at a much faster rate than expected, and the Asia-Pacific region is vulnerable to the climate crisis."
He added, "Through experiencing COVID-19, we have realized how urgent coexistence with nature is, and we are strengthening international cooperation for sustainable development. I hope today's forum will serve as an opportunity to unite the actions of Asia-Pacific countries and further become a model leading global solidarity and cooperation."
President Moon stated, "In 2019, 40% of natural disasters such as typhoons, floods, and droughts worldwide occurred in the Asia-Pacific region," and argued, "If we prepare and respond proactively, it could be an opportunity to overcome the climate crisis and achieve sustainable growth through the combination of green industries like renewable energy and the hydrogen economy with the digital economy."
He explained, "Korea declared '2050 Carbon Neutrality' last year. With national participation including civil society and local governments, we plan to announce an enhanced '2030 NDC' at COP26 next month," adding, "We are also accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy. Companies are voluntarily increasing investments in renewable energy, turning 'carbon neutrality' into a new opportunity for growth and job creation."
President Moon pledged, "The government is supporting industrial efforts through the 'Green New Deal,' investing 52 billion dollars by 2025. Korea will share its experience in transitioning to a low-carbon economy with the international community and expand green ODA to help developing countries build capacity to respond to the climate crisis."
He requested support, saying, "We intend to contribute more actively by hosting COP28 in 2023 so that we can advance the path of 'carbon neutrality' together with the world."
Furthermore, President Moon emphasized, "Efforts to conserve marine and forest ecosystems and protect biodiversity are also urgent for coexistence with nature," and stated, "Korea will actively cooperate to ensure the adoption of the 'Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework' at the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity."
